Joseph Dayton Gay, Sr., 72, of Bayard, WV, died Saturday, July 11, 2020, at his residence.
Born September 20, 1947, in Bayard, he was the son of the late John W. and Mary E. (Conaway) Gay. Joseph was also preceded in death by one brother, William L. Gay; two sisters, Melva J. (Gay) Steyer-Cator, and Nancy L. Gay.
Mr. Gay was a coal miner for Laurel Run Mining Co., Island Creek Coal and Robinson Run Mining Co. and a Vietnam War Army veteran. Joseph was a member of the Bayard Church of God, UMWA, Local 1501, Mountain Top Hunting Club and a lifetime member of Deer Park V.F.W.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Kay (Willard) Gay; two sons, Joseph D. Gay, Jr. and special grandson, Aiden and Richard W. (Cindy) Gay, all of Bayard; one brother, Roy E. Gay, Enterprise, WV; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; numerous “favorite” nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Bayard Church of God on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Funeral service will follow in the church at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Philip Marcum and Reverend William McAllister officiating. Interment will be in the Bayard Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by local area veteran’s organizations.
