Floyd Walter Baker, 85, of Grantsville, MD, died Monday, July 20, 2020, at Mon Health, Morgantown, WV.
Born March 15, 1935, in Grantsville, he was the son of the late Norman E. and Minnie E. (Poleman) Baker. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Verda Durst and Leota Baker; and half-brother, Allen Yommer.
Mr. Baker was an insurance agent for Lutheran Brotherhood and had worked for nine years for Liberty Trust Co. (now M&T). After his insurance career he pursued several business ventures. Floyd was instrumental in establishing the Northern Garrett Co. Rescue Squad and was in the first EMT Class held in Garrett Co. He was president of the first graduating class of Northern High School in 1953. Floyd was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Jennings and a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Rose Ellen (Johnston) Baker; three sons, Gary Baker and Blair Baker, both of Grantsville; William Baker, Huntsville, AL; one daughter, Marcia Warnick, Swanton, MD; one foster daughter, Vickie Gossett, Aurora, WV; 14 grandchildren, Daniel, Jamie, Brandon, Stevie, Pamela, Andrew, Timothy, Nathan, Jessica, Christopher, Alex, Matthew, Patrick and Ashley; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received in the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Thursday, July 23, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Ryan Heycock officiating. Interment will be in the Grantsville Cemetery.
