Dorothy Jean Spear, 83, of Friendsville, MD, died Thursday, February 13, 2020, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, WV.
Born September 27, 1936, in Friendsville, she was the daughter of the late Emert William and Margaret Laura (Dunham) Shoemaker. She was also preceded in death by one brother, William Shoemaker and one sister, Virginia Bernard.
Mrs. Spear was a librarian for the Ruth Enlow Library, Friendsville Branch and also worked at Schlosnagle’s Store, Friendsville Bank, Clover Farm Store and was a substitute teacher. Dorothy was a 1954 graduate with honors and member of the Honor Society, of Northern High School, the second class to graduate from Northern High School. She volunteered for the Fiddler’s Contest, the first Friendsville Days Committee, the Friendsville Bicentennial Planning Committee and the WELCA. She was a lifetime member of the Grace Lutheran Church, where she played the piano and organ, was a Sunday school teacher and treasurer. She was also a member of the Draft Horse Association and was a Friendsville Historian.
Dorothy was a remarkable example, loving, kind and always willing to help anyone. Many nieces, nephews and neighborhood children considered her a second mother. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, family genealogy, watching sports and making scrapbooks for her grandchildren of their sports and school events.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, James Roger Spear, I, whom she married, February 11, 1956; proud mother of two children, Paula Jean Spear and James Roger Spear, II and wife, Gena, all of Friendsville; two brothers, James Shoemaker, Pasadena, MD; Rick Shoemaker, Friendsville; proud grandmother of four grandsons, Kody Suter, Clint Suter, Jimmy Spear, III and Jesse Spear; proud great-grandmother of two great-grandsons, Konor Suter and Karson Suter.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, February 23, 2020, at Grace Lutheran Church, Friendsville, at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Peter Suwak officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
