December 15, 1952 ~ June 19, 2020 (age 67)

Obituary

Donald Eugene Tasker, 67, of Oakland, MD, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2020, at his home.

Born December 15, 1952, he was the son of the late Ronald Eugene and Shirley Ann (Riggleman) Tasker. He was also preceded in death by his twin brother, Ronald Oliver Tasker, and his sister, Barbara Ann Knotts.

Don grew up with his close knit family in the Deep Creek area along Glendale road.    He moved into group home living at Appalachian Crossroads many years ago and shared his home with two friends

Donnie had many loves in his life including God, his family, his friends and his girlfriend Shelly of many years.   We can’t leave out his love for the Pittsburgh Steelers too.   He loved children and animals of all kinds and loved when staff would bring their young kids into work so he could hold them and talk with them.   He participated in Special Olympics for many years and his favorite sport was bowling.  His friendships and relationships were indeed the highlight of his life.  He was a wonderful friend to many people and always made sure everyone knew how much he cared about them.   Don was a thoughtful man as well as a jokester and enjoyed teasing the staff at his home.

In his younger years he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing and being in the woods.  He like to cook and especially liked preparing venison.

Don had a long and successful career with Appalachian Crossroads.  He enrolled in 1975 and thus was one of the founding clients in our community.  Early in his career he worked in the wood shop and the grounds maintenance business.  He was the lead operator of the mowing tractors for many years and was legendary at Bausch and Lomb for his skill and speed with a variety of tractors.

Eventually he retired from ground maintenance and began working in the mailroom at Appalachian Crossroads.   He was skilled at operating the mailing equipment until his retirement in 2015.

During retirement he enjoyed building and painting model cars, trucks and planes and would donate them to local children.    He was an avid vegetable and flower gardener.  He arranged for raised vegetable beds to be built at his home to accommodate his wheel chair and his gardens were the envy of many.  Don would always share his annual harvest with his friends.  He also enjoyed watching his flowers bloom and watching all the birds and critters that would visit his yard.

He loved when his sister would come in because he knew whatever he wanted for lunch, she would bring it. She would always bring him something he could work on whether it was a wood project or a model. Don couldn't wait till the new spring season of the BLM motor sports to begin so he could get his new hat and t-shirt to show off. He will be sadly missed by his sissy and brother-in-law.

Don will be dearly missed by many and will always be remembered as an extraordinary friend and a wonderful brother. He is survived by one brother, Randall “Steve” Tasker and wife, Carman, Clarksville, TN; one sister, Donna J. Lake and husband, Bobby, Uniontown, PA; three nephews, Lantz Tasker, Timothy Savage, Jr., Kevin Savage; six great nieces and nephews, Larissa, Hunter, Skylie, Mekelle, Lexi, Walker.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Drive, Oakland, MD, on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, June 25, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Russell Liller officiating.
