Ruth Ella (Collier) Fitzpatrick Williams

November 26, 1931 ~ September 29, 2019 (age 87)

Ruth Fitzpatrick Williams, 87, a retired special education specialist, passed away on September 29, 2019, at Goodwill Assisted Living Facility, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Fitzpatrick Williams had been battling cancer for the past year.

Mrs. Fitzpatrick Williams, a long-time resident of LaVale, MD, was born Ruth Ella Collier in Confluence, PA, in 1931 to Walter Weller Collier and Dorothea Louise Reichenbecher Collier.

She grew up in northern Garrett County near Keyser’s Ridge on her family farm from where her love of animals and gardening stemmed. Mrs. Fitzpatrick Williams had a life-long passion for education and held a variety of roles for more than 45 years in primary and secondary education, positively impacting the lives of thousands of children. She began her career teaching first grade in Montgomery County, MD and soon focused on reading, volunteering at a number of reading clinics. After her two daughters were both in school, Mrs. Fitzpatrick Williams spent the majority of her career in roles in Special Education, ranging from resource teacher to diagnostic prescriptive teacher and special education facilitator. She earned a BS in Education and MA in Administration from Frostburg State University and MA in Reading from George Washington University. She also completed post-graduate studies in Learning Disabilities at Johns Hopkins University and was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa teachers’ sorority.

Mrs. Fitzpatrick Williams was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cumberland, MD, and was most recently a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Accident, MD.

Mrs. Fitzpatrick Williams is survived by her daughters Lisa (Heidi) Fitzpatrick and Karen (John) Brewer, and her granddaughters Bailey and Lindsay Brewer. She is predeceased by her first husband John Brennan Fitzpatrick and second husband Charles Donald Williams, Sr.

Friends may call at the Zion Lutheran Church, Accident, on Friday, October 4, 2019, from 10-11 a.m. Funeral services will follow in the church at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. James Oester officiating. Interment will be in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, in the Cove.
