Miriam Lois Bielau Loos Smouse

April 22, 1926 ~ May 5, 2018 (age 92)

Miriam Lois Bielau Loos Smouse, of Port Saint Lucie, FL, passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2018, after a brief illness.

Born April 22, 1926, in Pittsburgh, PA, Miriam was the second of four daughters of the late Otto Theodore and Ruth (Sexauer) Bielau. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Robert A. Loos, her husband of 11 years, Jack Smouse, and sister, Joan B. Crawford.

Miriam was a 1943 graduate of Carrick High School and completed the Retail and Merchandising Program at the University of Pittsburgh. She worked as Assistant Buyer for the Joseph Horne Company prior to marrying Robert Loos in 1950. Miriam and Bob spent many nights on the dance floor during their marriage, and were avid bridge players and golfers. She was active in the Rosslyn Farms Women’s Club and the Carnegie Boys’ Club. Her house was a favorite gathering place for all of the neighborhood children, and many a stray dog, cat or college friend found a home there and a place at the dinner table. On Miriam’s 76th birthday, she surprised everyone by eloping with Jack Smouse. She and Jack shared a love of painting. Together they enjoyed world travels and many adventures such as glider plane flying. But her true joy was her family: her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Miriam faced life with determination and good humor. Her spirit was strong and joyful, and is her greatest legacy to all who loved her.

Miriam is survived by sons, Robert B. Loos, Miami, FL, Thomas P. (Nancy C.) Loos, Dumont, CO, and C. William (Elizabeth M.) Loos, Weehawken, NJ; daughters, Cynthia A. Loos (Brian Shanley), Conway, SC, and Elizabeth R. Loos, Bismarck, ND; grandchildren, Katie Neral, Baltimore, MD, Emily (A. Lee) Chapman, Westminster, MD, Cheniene Loos, Miami, FL, Cory Anderson, South Daytona, FL, Rayna, Patrick and Luke Loos, Weehawken, NJ, and Gus Rohwer, Bismarck, ND; great-grandchildren, Adina Scarpelli and Savannah Chapman, Westminster, MD and River Bielau Loos-Lazo, Miami, FL; sisters, Arlene B. Killian, Lancaster, PA, and Barbara B. (Jon) Nivus, Laconia, NH, and many nieces and nephews.
