Mildred R. (Ream) Shilke

1923 ~ 2018 (age 95)

On Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at the age of 95, Mildred Shilke died at her home surrounded by family and her dear kitties.

Millie was born on August 25, 1923 in Bakersville, PA to Frank and Gertrude (Schlag) Ream.  She married the preacher’s son, Charles H. Shilke, on Christmas Day in 1944, just before finishing her Nurses Training Program at Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, MD.  They raised three children; Karen Louise Emmel, Charles Robert Shilke and Susan Shilke Fowler; welcomed numerous pets in their home; and made a million friends along the way.  Millie’s compassion, intelligence and deep commitment to cleanliness served her well during her 20+ years as an RN.  She especially loved her students and staff at Penn State University’s hospital.  Friends say she grew younger from being surrounded by college students, especially during the tumultuous times of the 60’s and 70’s.  During her retirement years in Garrett County, she volunteered at the local hospital.

Millie and Chuck loved travel. Chuck only loved one destination, Deep Creek Lake.  Fishing, boating, friends and family were all he needed.  After his death, Millie expanded her travel to include many European countries and to the spot that was featured on the cover of her elementary school Geography book, Machu Pichu. She had dreamed of it for 65 years and was spiritually moved by her visit.  Her son, Bob, joined her on many adventures and she took granddaughters on trips to celebrate college graduations as well.  Her adventurous streak let her paraglide off the Swiss alps, white water raft locally, hike to an old gold mine in Alaska, and take a helicopter ride over an active volcano.  Reading was another favorite way to explore the world and the varied people and lives that captured her attention in history or modern day.  She was a lot of fun and loved most everyone she met.

Millie was preceded in death by her husband; parents; granddaughter, Heather Emmel; sister and brother- in-law, Ruth and Ed Holliday; and nephew, Chuck Holliday.  She is survived by her three children, nephew Rex Holliday, and three granddaughters, Hilary Emmel, Holly Cannon, and Sara Fowler.  Two kitties, Emme and Barney, already miss her greatly.

There will be a memorial service at Newman Funeral Homes P.A., 1100 Memorial Dr., Oakland, MD, 21550,  at 1:00 pm., on Saturday, December 1, 2018.
