Mary Alice (Spiker) Friend

August 27, 1932 ~ August 20, 2019 (age 86)

Mary Alice (Spiker) Friend, 86, peacefully passed away on August 20, 2019, at her home in Oakland, MD. 

Born August 27, 1932, in Swallow Falls, she was the daughter of the late Reverend Walter Scott and Martha Ellen (Lewis) Spiker. She was also preceded in death by four older brothers and an infant sister; her husband, Russell Glenn Friend; an infant son, Roger Lynn Friend; two sons, Pastor Michael Lynn Friend and Jason Glenn Friend; grandson, Aaron DeWitt.

Mary received Christ as her Savior in her youth, never wavering in her faith and the certainty of where she would spend eternity. She was a generous and loving person, making a positive impact on the lives she touched. In earlier years, Mary was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, where she was faithful in attending and participating in activities such as teaching children in Sunday School and Bible School. In recent years, she was a member of Ferndale Baptist Church, where her son Michael was pastor until his death in 2011. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, enjoying simple pleasures such as reading, traveling, homemaking, and opening her heart and home to friends and family.

Mary retired from Garrett County Memorial Hospital, after twenty years of service as director of Materials Management. She had also been employed by the Henry Ford General Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, in the early 1950's.

She is survived by one daughter, Sharon (Friend) Tasker and husband, Fred; daughters-in-law, Ruth Friend and Joy Friend, all of Oakland; nine grandchildren, Ranae (Friend) Eyler and husband, Shawn, Hagerstown, MD; Leslie (Friend) Murphy and husband, Matt, West Chester, PA; Sarah Friend, Oakland; Caleb Friend, Hagerstown; Teroy Friend, Oakland; Victoria Tichnell and husband, Jason, Cumberland, MD; Tabitha Friend, Oakland; Amy Leydig and husband, Tome, Grantsville, MD; Jenna Friend, Oakland; six great grandchildren, Sophia DeWitt, Grantsville; Chloe and Michael Murphy, West Chester, PA; Ezra Large, Elias Folk, and Delainey Cummings, all of Oakland; four step-grandchildren, Jared Warnick, Christy, Alayna, and Leah Beckman.

Friends will be received at Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Dr., Oakland, MD, 21550, on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be conducted at Deep Creek Baptist Church, 19841 Garrett Hwy., Oakland, MD, 21550, on Friday, August 23, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jon Zeigler officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
