Johnny Ray Hershberger, 59, of Kitzmiller, MD, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, November 9, 2019, at Western Maryland Health Systems, Cumberland, MD.
Born December 17, 1959, in Oakland, MD, he was the son of Thelma (Thompson) Hershberger, Blaine, WV and the late John Lee Hershberger. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Rayleen Michelle Hershberger.
Johnny graduated from Southern Garrett High School where he was a wrestler. He earned his AA degree from Garrett College and attended the Maryland State Police Academy. Johnny won second place in the Maryland State plumbing competition and was a member of Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Oakland. He retired from the Garrett County Sheriff’s Department after 33 years of service as a jailer and a dispatcher. He worked for the Garrett County Roads Department, was a construction laborer, and also had his Master's Plumber license. Johnny was a member of the Elks Lodge 2481, a life member and past chief of Kitzmiller Volunteer Fire Department, and a former EMT with Southern Garrett County Rescue Squad. He was an avid hunter on the family farm and enjoyed hunting excursions out west. Johnny was a great loving father, husband, son, brother, and friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cathleen Hershberger; one son, Justin Hershberger; one daughter, Bethany Hershberger; two brothers, Todd Hershberger and wife, Bronwyn; Terry Hershberger; two very special friends, Paul J. Pratt and Mark Pfaff.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Drive, Oakland, MD, 21550, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 208 South Fourth Street, Oakland with Father Tom Gills officiating. Interment will be in the Deer Park Cemetery.
