Delbert Glenn “Deb” Guthrie, 80, of Avilton, MD, passed away peacefully at home Sunday, June 23, 2019, after a brief battle with multiple myeloma.
Born September 1, 1938, in Bruceton Mills, WV, he was the son of the late Glenn and Grace (Sisler) Guthrie. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Marie Guthrie; five brothers, Jeremiah, James, Robert, Floyd “Greaser” and Harvey Guthrie; and three sisters, Genevieve Swauger, Betty Isabel and Thelma Russell.
Deb was a U.S. Army Veteran from 1961-1963 during the Vietnam War. He began working for Turners Dairy, followed by Mac McKenzie’s Texaco Garage on Longstretch. Deb was then a mechanic at Diehl’s Ford Sales, Grantsville, before becoming employed by the Garrett County Roads Dept., Grantsville, where he retired in 2000 as a grader operator. Not being one to “sit in a rocking chair and grow old”, he went on to work part time at New Germany State Park and Savage River Forest for about eight years in maintenance.
He is survived by two daughters, Tina and husband, Brian Warnick, Avilton, MD; Amy and husband, Marty Dunnington, Cumberland, MD; three grandchildren, Randi Stafford, Denver, CO; Trevor and wife, Amber Warnick, Grantsville; Garrett Appel, Cumberland; one step-grandchild, Matthew Dunnington, Cumberland; two great-grandsons, who were Pappy’s pride and joy, Cayden Roy and Easton Kage Warnick, Grantsville; one brother, Carl Guthrie, Malvern, AR and four sisters, Marie Hixon, Morgantown, Helen Fike and Mary Lou Guthrie, both of Grantsville and Linda Galloway, Bruceton Mills.
Deb was a jack of all trades, and passed those skills onto his grandson, Trevor. He also loved fishing and hunting.
Per his request, he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, is in charge of cremation arrangements.
