In
1955, the Newman Funeral Home was established with the purchase of
the Winterberg Funeral Home, in Grantsville. The Newman Funeral Home
in Friendsville, MD was established in 1960, and later rebuilt at
its present location in 1965. A third funeral home was opened in 1985,
midway between the towns of Accident and McHenry and in 1990 the former
Thomas Funeral Home in Salisbury, PA was purchased. On December 27, 2008, the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., was established in downtown Oakland.
D.
Lynn and Carol A. Newman are the current owners having purchased the
family funeral homes from Lynn’s parents, Don & Ruth Newman
in 1991. Lynn and Carol were married in 1984 and in 1985, Carol became
fully involved in the firm, taking on the role of office manager.
They are the proud parents of 3 sons, Geoffrey, Aaron and Cameron.
The Grantsville facility was dedicated in memory of Donald J. Newman
who passed away February 28, 1992.
Lynn received his AA Degree in Mortuary Science from the Community
College of Baltimore County, Catonsville campus, in 1976 and his Maryland
mortician license in 1977. In 1988, he received his Pennsylvania Funeral
Directors license, and he also holds a West Virginia Funeral Directors
courtesy card.
From 1955 to 1979, the Grantsville facility changed its appearance
several times. Then, in the late 1980’s, after the purchase
of 3 lots adjoining Town Park, the funeral home was completely rebuilt
on the Miller St. site in 1995. This state of the art facility was
designed for the future to handle an increase in population as well
as a diversity of services.
Due to a tornado, which seriously damaged the Salisbury Funeral home
in 1998, the building was raised. After 3 years of planning, searching
for land and obtaining permits, the Newman Funeral Home, Inc., was
rebuilt at its present location ½ mile north of Salisbury.
It was designed for convenience, and is totally handicap accessible,
as are all of our locations.
Lynn & Carol established their newest funeral home in Oakland, Maryland at 203 South Second Street in downtown Oakland with the leasing of the former Gonder Building from First United Bank and Trust.
Richard L. Mattingly, Jr. of Oakland, a Mortuary Science graduate of Catonsville Community College of Baltimore County has assumed the position of supervisor.
